Privacy Policy

Last updated September 14, 2026

Hearthside is a family storytelling app. Because families may use Hearthside with children, privacy matters especially here. This page explains what information Hearthside handles in its current beta, why it is used, and which outside services help operate the app.

1. Adults manage Hearthside accounts

Hearthside accounts are intended to be created and managed by an adult, such as a parent, guardian, or teacher. An adult can create optional profiles to make Hearthside easier to use for a child, family, or classroom. Hearthside is not designed to require a child to create their own account.

Parents, guardians, and teachers should avoid entering unnecessary personal information about a child. Hearthside only needs enough profile information to adapt the storytelling experience.

2. Information Hearthside handles

  • Account information. If you sign in, Hearthside uses Supabase to provide authentication. Supabase may process your email address and information needed to maintain your signed-in session.
  • Optional profiles. Signed-in adults can create profiles. Depending on the profile type, a profile may include a display name, age, household reader count, classroom name, or grade level. These profiles are stored in Hearthside's Supabase database so they can be available when you return. Database access rules are configured so an authenticated user can access only their own profiles.
  • Story requests. When you ask Hearthside to create a story, the information needed for that request — such as the selected story type, age or grade range, reader mode, topic, and any optional story ingredients you provide — is sent to Hearthside's server and to OpenAI so the story can be generated. Please do not include sensitive personal information in custom story prompts.
  • Saved stories and story series. In the current beta, stories you save to your library and series you save to continue later are stored in your browser's local storage on that device. They are not currently synchronized to your Hearthside account across devices.
  • Narration requests. When Ember narration is enabled and you choose to have Hearthside narrate a story, the story text is sent to ElevenLabs so audio can be generated. OpenAI may also analyze the story to identify dialogue and cast character voices. Narration is optional.
  • Dictionary lookups. When you tap a word for a definition, that word may be sent to the dictionary service used by Hearthside. The rest of the story is not needed for the lookup.
  • Basic technical and rate-limit data. Hearthside uses technical information such as IP address server-side to enforce fair-use limits, reduce abuse, and keep the service available. Hosting providers may also maintain ordinary security and operational logs.
  • Beta product analytics. Hearthside may record limited product events during beta — for example, whether a story was successfully generated, which general story category or reader mode was selected, whether narration was used, and whether a user returned. We aim to use age bands rather than birth dates and to avoid sending child names, story text, custom prompt text, or other freeform story content into general product analytics.
  • Feedback. If you voluntarily submit beta feedback, Hearthside may keep the information you provide so we can investigate bugs, understand what families like or dislike, and improve the product.

3. Services that help operate Hearthside

Hearthside relies on a small number of service providers to operate the product. Depending on which features you use, information may be processed by:

  • OpenAI — generates Hearthside story text and analyzes dialogue for character casting.
  • ElevenLabs — generates Ember narration audio from the story text.
  • Supabase — provides account authentication and stores optional user-created profiles.
  • Netlify — hosts Hearthside and its server functions and may process standard technical logs needed to operate and secure the service.
  • Dictionary service providers — receive an individual word when you request a definition.

These providers operate under their own terms and privacy practices. Hearthside does not sell personal information or children's information.

4. Children's privacy and parental control

Hearthside is designed around adult-managed family or classroom use. We want personalization to remain understandable and controllable by families. As Hearthside adds deeper memory or personalization features, those features should include clear parental controls and appropriate ways to review or remove stored information.

Hearthside is still in beta. We are not claiming that this draft policy or the current product has completed every legal or compliance review that may be required for a broad child-directed commercial launch. Additional legal review will be completed before Hearthside expands beyond the current testing stage or begins accepting payments.

5. Analytics and advertising

Beta analytics are intended to answer product questions such as whether families can generate stories successfully, which broad features are used, whether people return, and where bugs occur. Hearthside should collect only what is useful for improving the product.

Hearthside does not use a child's story interests to target advertising. If Hearthside's analytics approach changes materially, this policy will be updated.

6. Payments

Hearthside does not currently require payment for the Founding Families beta. If paid plans are introduced later, payment is expected to be handled by a third-party payment processor. Hearthside does not intend to store full payment-card numbers itself. This policy will be updated before paid plans launch to identify the payment provider and describe the applicable data flow.

7. Your choices

You can choose whether to create optional profiles, whether to use Ember narration, what story details to provide, and whether to submit feedback. Saved stories stored locally can be removed by deleting them in Hearthside or by clearing Hearthside's browser/site data.

8. Changes to this policy

Hearthside is evolving during beta. This policy will be updated when data practices or features materially change. The date at the top of this page shows the most recent revision.
